Effect of Lactate and Pyruvate on the Reduction of Methemoglobin by Rabbit Erythrocytes in vitro

Abstract
|
|
|
The reduction of methemoglobin by rabbit erythrocytes in vitro was suppressed by the addition of pyruvate (8-10 nmM), and enhanced by lactate (28-58 MM).
It is suggested that the inhibitory effect of pyruvate on methemoglobin reduction might possibly be protected in vivo by the heart-type isozyme of lactate dehydrogenase which is predominant in normal mature erythrocytes and exhibits the property of being inhibited by high pyruvate concentration.
